Flooring Systems

Image
Floor framing system consists of three types: wood, steel, and concrete. The wood flooring framing system can either be platform or balloon framing. Platform framing is a process of framing each floor of the house separately while balloon framing is the vertical stud that extends the full height of the building structure. Platform framing is what is called a light frame while balloon framing is a heavy timber frame. As for the steel floor framing, it can either be done with an open web steel joist with concrete in metal decking or it can be with concrete in metal decking. Using steel for the floor framing is great for durability and is more resistant to pests, unlike wood framing. The image to the right is an example of a steel flooring system. Lastly, a concrete floor system is when slabs are poured into place on-site or off-site. Concrete also offers durability, especially in bigger structures; concrete is also resistant to fire, water, and odors. Additionally, it is a more sustaina...

Walls

It is important for interior designers to learn and be knowledgeable about exterior and interior walls because they are the foundation of the design concept. Walls portray a structure and aesthetic element to the design of a building. Additionally, having knowledge of wall materials such as acoustic insulation or thermal conductivity will dictate the comfort and efficiency a space may have. Moreover, walls determine the overall layout of a space and how rooms are divided. Being educated on walls helps with knowing how a wall can be placed and what size of a wall can be used where. Site Considerations and the Building Enclosure

Image
When doing a site analysis it is important to look at key things such as the relation the building site has on the interior design, the foundation system, the components of a building enclosed, and the materials used throughout the building, especially on the roof and the form of the roof. To simplify analyzation, it is divided into four steps- structural system; mechanical, plumbing, electrical system; enclosed system; and interior systems. The processes will always be changing and usually will never be the same depending on what the building is and how it was built.  Beginning with the site analysis, the overall features to consider are regulatory, aesthetic, and environmental; what the space is surrounding and how the building fits in the space. While the architect is responsible for positioning where the building is located on a site; input is needed by a landscape architect, civil engineer, and interior designer. Holistic Approach to Building Design & Construction

Image
Beyond only solving problems, holistic design takes into account every element of the ecosystem that a product is used in. This includes aesthetics, sustainability, spirituality, and other topics. The aesthetics is what makes a product appealing to buyers, and one of the main factors that affects consumers' decisions to choose one product over another is visual appeal. Furthermore, sustainable design is when long-term solutions are produced to maintain human well-being and benefit the environment. This can be done by using recyclable, compostable, and reusable waste material in creating new products. Lastly, holistic looks at the spiritual aspects of things like how a building affects a person's daily life and helps a person.  The image to the left is a diagram that explains holistic design and explaining its importance on humans. When designing a space, holistic design is critical because it indicates what a space should do for someone and how it betters the environment. Th...
